2023

These paintings are from a larger body of work that was exhibited under the title Semi- Detachment in the Summer of 2023, a collaboration between me and composer Kieran Brunt.
It was comprised of 40 paintings of suburban landscapes accompanied by a soundtrack, featuring piano, electronics and the voices of choral ensemble Shards, that was composed specifically for this show.
The shared experience of quiet, stillness and solitude in the suburbs in South West London provided the thematic meeting point for us both and we explored memory, locality and nostalgia in our native environment.
These postcard-sized works on copper are tinged with a knowing sense of nostalgia. Resembling photographic prints, their compositions and dramatic lighting present a cinematic quality. The ordinary becoming extraordinary. The viewer is drawn closer to the intimate paintings revealing their delicate and excitingly textured surfaces.
Brunt's music, composed in response to the collection, using the paintings’ composition as a starting point, playing with the ideas of proximity and distance through gradually shifting musical layers. Repetitive piano figures sit in front of swirling choral and electronic layers, as the real and the imagined intermingle and coalesce.
